The Birla Institute of Technology
(BIT), Ranchi was founded by the eminent philanthrophist and
industrialist, late Shri
B.M.Birla as a part of the lifelong commitment towards building a
technologically advanced and industrially strong India. It was established in
1955 as a pioneering institution of technical education and research. The
achievements of the institute, both in terms of research and high standards of
academic programs, led to its attainment the status of Deemed University in
1986 under section 3 of the U.G.C Act of the Govt. Of India.
In 50 years of its existence, over 15,000
Degree holders in engineering and technology and over 2,000 post-graduates with
various specialization in Engineering, Pharmacy, Applied Sciences, Bio-medical
Instrumentation and Management disciplines have graduated from the institute.
The active research programmes of the institute have produced number of
Doctorates (Ph. D.’s) in various disciplines of Technology. Pharmacy Applied
Sciences and Management. The institute is located in picturesque 780 acre
setting at the confluence of the rivers Jimar and Suvarna-Rekha, 16 Kilometers
from Ranchi city. It is entirely residential, providing accommodation to over
1600 Under-Graduate and Post-graduate students and about
500 members of faculty and staff. The institute building including Research
laboratories, Lecture Halls, Library, Workshops etc. cover an area exceeding
3,50,000 sq. ft. it has co-educational facilities with separate hostel
accommodation for girls.
The well laid out campus of the Institute provides
facilities for cultural, recreational and sports activities. The institute has
been an stalwart amongst the institutions imparting the technical education and
has been included in the top 10 elite institutes of the country. The
institute attracts students not only from India but also from several other
countries of Asia and Africa. It is a full fledged member of the Association of
Indian Universities and is also a member of Association of Commonwealth
Universities and its degrees are recognized the world over.
